Field Notes #9
What's 17 times 34?
You don't know. You have to calculate it. But you know 5 times 5. You've always known 5 times 5. The difference between those two responses is the difference between calculation and category — and it's the difference between knowing something about your leadership and actually having it.
Every program in this curriculum is built on that distinction. You practice in the past — one day a week, same time, same day — reflecting on what you noticed. Did the principle show up in your life in the last seven days? Where? What happened? You slow down, you calculate, you look at it carefully. And then you do it again the following week. And again.
At some point, 578 stops being an answer you have to figure out. It becomes an answer you just have.
That's a category. That's what mastery feels like from the inside. Not effort. Recognition.
The answer to 17 times 34 is 578. How many Tuesdays until you stop calculating?
THIS IS NOT TRAINING. IT'S CALIBRATION.
